Review
I enjoyed Rules of Survival by Jus Accardo and thought it was an entertaining and fun read. As part of Entangled's Embrace, their New Adult fiction line, I was hoping for a swoon-worthy hero and a butt-kicking heroine, all wrapped up with a nice touch of suspense and a yummy romance. And, that's exactly what I got. It's a perfect read for Summer to escape to.
Our heroine, Mikayla, has spent her whole life on the run with her mother. From what, she does not know. Kept in the dark in order to try to protect her, her mother is murdered and Mikayla is wanted by the police for connections to the murder. On the run again, this time alone, she returns to the crime scene in order to find clues to that fateful day and clear her name. Waiting for her, she encounters two bounty hunters determined to bring her in for a reward. When shots are fired, and a third party shows up and threatens her life, she finds herself handcuffed to one of the bounty hunters, and on the run again. This time it's her life that is threatened. On the run with a bad-boy turned bounty hunter, tension escalates between Shaun and Mikayla as they fight their mutual attraction for each other as danger grows with each step they take.
Since she has always lived life on the run with her mother, Mikayla has never called any place home. Taught to be tough, a survivalist, she knows how to take care of herself. She has the need to be in control in order to feel safe, and has the type of personality that plots and plans before taking action. So, needless to say, when she finds herself cuffed by a bounty hunter, she is a bit pissed-off. To make matters worse, Shaun Denver couldn't get any sexier nor irritating if he tried. As a former bad-boy turned bounty hunter, Shaun is arrogant, spontaneous, and doesn't always think things through which drives Mikayla crazy. But, he's completely genuine, something that she admires and has never really experienced in someone before. Shaun can't decide if he wants to strangle Mikayla or kiss her, but finds they both share hardships in common and finds himself admiring this tough, yet vulnerable girl.
I was easily swept up into the story as Shaun and Mikayla slowly become closer, learning to trust one another as the twists and turns behind the murder, and what exactly Mikayla's mother was on the run from, are unraveled. There's tons of sexual tension and hot banter between these two. It was fun reading about these two characters, nearly opposites in manner, cuffed together and in danger throughout, get out of one scrap only to end up an even more dangerous situation.
This was a fun book to escape to with a light touch of suspense, action, and tons of romantic tension between two flawed characters. Humor and great dialogue kept me happily turning the pages.
